Nitronic 60 Spring Wire (UNS S21800) - Anti-Galling Stainless Spring Stock

Nitronic 60 spring wire per ASTM A580 and AMS 5847, UNS S21800
Nitronic 60 spring wire per ASTM A580 and AMS 5847

Nitronic 60 spring wire (UNS S21800) per ASTM A580 and AMS 5847 in cold-drawn (CD) and spring-temper (HS) conditions. The anti-galling chemistry prevents the coil-to-coil cold-welding failure that locks heavy-compression springs in 302 and 17-7 PH spring stock. Captures the niche-but-valuable 'nitronic springs' search demand.

TorqBolt stocks Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) at our Mumbai head office and Rajkot production plant. Each consignment ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certification by default and 3.2 dual-witnessed inspection (Lloyds, TUV, DNV, BV) on request. Nitronic 60 Spring Wire Specifications

Cold-drawn and spring-temper wire in standard diameter sizes for compression, extension, torsion, wave, and Belleville spring service.

  • Size range: 0.020 inch (0.5 mm) through 0.5 inch (12 mm).
  • Standards: ASTM A580 / AMS 5847.
  • Solution-annealed (S-A), cold-drawn (CD), and spring-temper (HS) conditions. Spring-temper reaches 1000 to 1200 MPa tensile.
  • Use cases: compression springs (heavy-load), extension springs (hooked-end), torsion springs (hinged-action), wave springs (flat-coil), Belleville disc springs.
  • Anti-galling chemistry: prevents coil-on-coil seizing under heavy compression loading.
  • Non-magnetic in annealed condition (mu_r below 1.005), suitable for instrumentation springs.
  • Related forms: straight wire, Helicoil thread inserts (Nitronic 60 wire feedstock).

Galling Resistance

Nitronic 60 threshold stress 50,000 psi+ per ASTM G98 vs 304/316L at 4,000-6,000 psi — 5 to 10× better galling resistance. See full ASTM G98 data and galling failure mechanism →

Heat Treatment

Solution anneal only at 1900-1950°F followed by water quench. No precipitation hardening response. See full heat treatment specification →

Welding

Matching filler ER218 per AMS 5847. GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW all qualified. No PWHT required for typical thicknesses. See full welding procedure →

Material Selection

Nitronic 60 wins for anti-galling at high temperature where 304/316L gall. Stellite is harder but brittle. vs 316L · vs Nitronic 50 · austenitic context →

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes of spring wire are stocked?

0.020 inch (0.5 mm) through 0.5 inch (12 mm). Custom larger sizes and special tolerances quoted on a 4 to 8 week lead time.

What standards govern spring wire?

ASTM A580 / AMS 5847. Customer specifications may add explicit dimensional, surface, or test requirements.

Can spring wire be supplied in cold-worked HS condition?

Yes. Solution-annealed (S-A) is standard. Cold-worked HS condition reaches 620 MPa yield and 30 HRC maximum hardness; specify on order.

What surface finishes are available?

Mill / pickled-passivated standard per ASTM A380. Polished, 2B mill, and 2D mill finishes available on request. Sanitary-finish (Ra 0.4 to 0.8 um) for food-processing service.

What certification ships with spring wire?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certification by default. EN 10204 3.2 dual-witnessed third-party (Lloyds, TUV, DNV, BV) on request.
