Nitronic 60 plate per ASTM A240

Nitronic 60 plate (UNS S21800) is the form of choice for anti-galling wear plates, slide bars, bushings, hopper liners, and machined-from-plate components in marine and food-processing service. Hot-rolled and solution-annealed to 95 HRB max, 380 MPa min yield, 690 MPa min tensile per ASTM A479. The fully austenitic high-Mn-Si-N matrix resists adhesive wear under sliding contact even when paired against 304 or 316L counterfaces.

Specification Coverage

Order to ASTM A479 for plate that will be machined into pressure-containing valve bodies, pump housings, or other pressure-boundary components. ASTM A276 covers plate for general industrial service. Both specs reference UNS S21800 chemistry and the same annealed mechanical minimums. Heavy plate (over 50 mm thick) commonly orders to A479 with 100% UT inspection per ASTM A578.

Plate is supplied hot-rolled with mill scale (HR), pickled and passivated (HR-P), or cold-rolled annealed (CR-A) for thinner gauges. Surface finish per ASTM A480. Cut-to-size service available with waterjet or plasma cutoff; mill scale removal and edge preparation on request.

Heat Treatment Condition

Solution-annealed at 1010-1120 C (1850-2050 F) followed by water quench. After heavy plate forming or weld fabrication, post-fabrication solution anneal restores the annealed property profile and removes any cold work introduced by forming. Do not confuse with precipitation hardening, Nitronic 60 has no aging step. See heat treatment.

Surface Finish & Tolerances

Hot-rolled mill scale finish (No. 1) is standard for plate going to subsequent machining or welding. Pickled-and-passivated (No. 2D) is supplied where the as-rolled surface will be the final functional surface. Cold-rolled annealed (No. 2B) is available on thinner gauges. Flatness per ASTM A480 standard tolerance; fine flat plate available on quoted basis. Edge condition: as-rolled, sheared, plasma-cut, or waterjet-cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is stocked?

3 mm (0.118 in) through 100 mm (4 in) standard. Thicker plate is available on quoted basis with mill-direct order.

Is plate UT-inspected?

Plate over 50 mm typically orders to ASTM A578 with 100% ultrasonic inspection. Thinner plate UT on request.

Can plate be welded?

Yes. Use ER218 matching wire (AMS 5847) or NitroMaxx 60 filler. GTAW and GMAW preferred. Post-weld solution anneal restores full annealed properties; small fabrications may be left as-welded if NACE / pressure requirements permit.

Is plate available in cold-rolled condition for spring or strain-hardened applications?

Yes for thin gauges (typically below 8 mm). Cold-rolled HS condition reaches yield ~830 MPa with reduced ductility; mind the NACE hardness window for sour service.

Can I get plate cut-to-size?

Yes. Waterjet, plasma, and abrasive-disc cutoff in-house. Edge preparation (bevel, square) on request.
