Nitronic 60 Seamless Pipe (UNS S21800) - Anti-Galling Stainless Pipe

Nitronic 60 seamless pipe per ASTM A312 and ASTM A511, UNS S21800
Nitronic 60 seamless pipe per ASTM A312 and ASTM A511

Nitronic 60 seamless pipe (UNS S21800) is the anti-galling austenitic stainless steel pipe specification for chemical processing, oil and gas, marine seawater, and sliding-contact piping service. Manufactured by hot extrusion or hot piercing of Nitronic 60 bar stock per ASTM A312 / A511 (where the alloy is listed under UNS S21800 austenitic family), or by drawn-over-mandrel cold-finishing for tight diameter tolerance. The high-Mn-Si-N anti-galling chemistry adds value for piping service where flange make-up, valve-stem trim, or internal sliding-element contact dominates the failure mode.

TorqBolt stocks Nitronic 60 pipe in NPS 1/4 inch through 12 inch, schedules 10S through 80S, in random and cut-to-length pieces. Larger sizes and custom wall thickness quoted on a short lead time. Each consignment ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certification by default; 3.2 dual-witnessed inspection on request. Contact info@torqbolt.com or +91-22-66157017 for sized stock and lead time.

Why Nitronic 60 Seamless Pipe vs 316L Pipe

316L is the workhorse austenitic stainless pipe for chemical service. Nitronic 60 pipe is specified where the controlling failure is NOT general pitting / chloride corrosion but galling at flange-bolt make-up, valve-stem to seat sliding contact, or internal mechanism interface. Two cases dominate:

  • Flange make-up galling, threaded flange / threaded fitting connections use bolting that gall in 316L self-mated service. Nitronic 60 piping with Nitronic 60 bolting per ASTM A193 B8R installs dry without anti-seize, eliminating torque-scatter and contamination of the assembly.
  • Valve and trim sliding contact, gate-valve and globe-valve internals slide against the seat insert and the body bore. Nitronic 60 pipe paired with Nitronic 60 trim eliminates the seat-galling failure that retires 316L valve trim early.

For straight non-sliding-contact pipe service where chloride pitting dominates, specify 316L or duplex 2205. For anti-galling-priority piping see this page; for the broader anti-galling story see galling resistance and stainless steel galling failure.

Nitronic 60 Pipe Standards Compliance

Pipe manufactured to the following standards bodies:

ASTM A312Seamless and welded austenitic stainless pipeListed under austenitic UNS family; UNS S21800 supplier-confirmed
ASTM A511Seamless stainless mechanical tubingBar-derived seamless
ASTM A580Stainless wire (related; pipe drawn from larger bar)Same UNS S21800 chemistry

Pipe in the solution-annealed condition meets NACE MR0175 hardness 95 HRB max for sour-service compliance. Cold-worked HS condition (~30 HRC) is available where wear life or higher pressure rating matters, but requires customer-spec endorsement under MR0175.

Nitronic 60 Pipe Chemistry and Mechanical Properties

Pipe chemistry per UNS S21800 spec (identical to bar / plate / wire chemistry):

ElementMin %Max %Typical %
Carbon (C)-0.100.05
Manganese (Mn)7.09.08.0
Silicon (Si)3.54.54.0
Chromium (Cr)16.018.017.0
Nickel (Ni)8.09.08.5
Nitrogen (N)0.080.180.13

See chemical composition for the full element table including residuals and the mechanical properties page for cold-work curves and temperature-derated allowables. Solution-annealed pipe meets minimum yield 380 MPa (55 ksi) and tensile 655 MPa (95 ksi); cold-worked HS condition reaches 620 MPa yield and 860 MPa tensile.

Nitronic 60 Pipe Applications by Industry

  • Oil and gas, subsea wellhead, NACE MR0175 sour-service piping where 316L is undersized for the H2S envelope and Nitronic 60 anti-galling matters for the flange-bolting interface. Subsea jumper pipe applications under API 6A.
  • Marine seawater, anti-galling pipe for shipboard hydraulic, fuel, and seawater service. Pair with Nitronic 60 flange bolting and valve stems for the full anti-galling stack.
  • Nuclear, reactor coolant and emergency cooling piping where pump and valve galling causes shutdown. ASME SA-312 compliant.
  • Food processing, anti-galling sanitary pipe with polished interior finish for mixer flow service. FDA-acceptable austenitic chemistry.
  • Chemical processing, sliding-contact internals (in-line valves, screw-conveyor enclosures, scraper internals) where 316L pipe inner wall scores under contact.
  • Cryogenic, LNG and liquid-nitrogen process piping, austenite stable to -196 C with no transformation embrittlement.
  • Pump and rotating equipment piping, suction and discharge piping in pumps where the rotating-shaft sliding contact in seal carriers matters.
  • Screw conveyor enclosures, flight-against-trough sliding service.

Pick the alloy by the dominant failure mode. For anti-galling-priority piping with adequate chloride resistance, Nitronic 60. For chloride-priority piping with adequate galling resistance, duplex 2205. For both at the highest level, Inconel 625 at 3-4x the duplex cost. See Nitronic 60 vs 316L and Nitronic 60 vs duplex 2205 for detailed pipe-grade comparisons.

  • Tubing per ASTM A580 for instrumentation and small-bore process service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nitronic 60 available as seamless pipe?

Yes. Hot-extruded seamless pipe is available in NPS 1/4 inch through 12 inch, schedules 10S through XXS. Larger sizes and custom wall thickness on quote. Manufactured under ASTM A312 / A511 where UNS S21800 is listed in the austenitic family.

What standards govern Nitronic 60 pipe?

ASTM A312 (seamless austenitic), ASTM A511 (seamless mechanical tubing), ASME B36.19 (dimensions), ASME SA-312 (code-stamped boiler / pressure vessel), NACE MR0175 (sour-service), API 6A (wellhead and Christmas-tree).

Is the pipe NACE MR0175 compliant?

Yes in the solution-annealed condition (95 HRB max hardness). Cold-worked HS condition may exceed the hardness limit and requires customer endorsement.

What surface finishes are available?

Pickled and passivated standard per ASTM A380. Polished interior (Ra 0.4 to 0.8 um) available for sanitary food-processing service. 2B mill finish for general industrial.

Difference between Nitronic 60 pipe and tubing?

Pipe is sized by NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) per ASME B36.19 with a fixed OD per NPS regardless of schedule. Tubing is sized by actual OD and wall thickness, used for instrumentation and small-bore process. Both available in Nitronic 60 chemistry.

What is the typical lead time?

7 to 14 days for NPS 1/4 inch through 2 inch in standard schedules from stock. Larger sizes, custom lengths, and non-standard schedules quote 4 to 8 weeks. Cut-to-length and custom polishing add 5 to 10 days.
