Austenitic stainless steel is the largest stainless steel family, characterized by the face-centered-cubic (FCC) gamma-iron crystal structure stabilized by nickel and nitrogen. The family includes 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 309, 310, Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910), and Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800). Nitronic 60 is the anti-galling austenitic grade with high-Mn-Si-N alloying that eliminates the sliding-contact cold-welding failure that retires 304 / 316L hardware early.

Family Positioning and Grade Selection

Austenitic stainless steels have a face-centered-cubic (FCC) gamma-iron crystal structure stable at room temperature. Nickel (8 to 35 percent) is the primary austenite stabilizer, supplemented by manganese, nitrogen, and carbon. The austenitic structure is non-magnetic, work-hardening, and ductile to cryogenic temperatures.

Common grades: 304 (UNS S30400, general-purpose), 316L (S31603, chloride-resistant), Nitronic 50 (S20910, high-strength + corrosion), Nitronic 60 (S21800, anti-galling). All share the FCC austenitic structure but differ in mechanical and corrosion performance.

Nitronic 60 is the austenitic grade for sliding-contact and threaded service where galling is the controlling failure mode. The high-Mn-Si-N chemistry doubles the yield strength (380 MPa vs 170 MPa for 304/316L) and raises galling-resistance per ASTM G98 by 5 to 10 times.

Galling Resistance vs 304 / 316L (ASTM G98)

Where threshold stress exceeds the applied contact stress, galling does not initiate. For 316L bolted joints at typical preload, contact stress routinely exceeds 70 MPa, so galling DOES initiate. Heat Treatment

Nitronic 60 is austenitic and NOT precipitation-hardenable. Standard heat treatment cycle is solution anneal only:

  • Solution Anneal, 1010 to 1120 C (1850 to 2050 F) for 30 to 60 minutes, water quench.
  • Stress Relief (optional), 450 to 480 C (840 to 900 F) for 2 to 4 hours, air cool.
  • Avoid 540 to 815 C range during cooldown, risk of sigma-phase precipitation. Quench fast through this range.
  • Cold work is the only strengthening mechanism, HS condition reaches ~30 HRC with retained ductility.

Welding

Nitronic 60 is weldable by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, and PAW processes. Nitronic 60 welding procedure uses matching filler ER218 per AMS 5847 (UNS S21880, cast variant). Key parameters:

  • Matching filler ER218 preserves anti-galling chemistry in the weld bead.
  • Preheat NOT required (austenitic).
  • Interpass temperature below 150 C (300 F) to avoid sigma precipitation.
  • Post-weld solution anneal for critical service; as-welded adequate for general.
  • ER309L is a non-matching emergency substitute; expect reduced galling resistance in the weld bead.
