Nitronic 60 Machining Speeds and Feeds (Turning, Drilling, Threading)

Nitronic 60 machining speeds and feeds tables, UNS S21800
Nitronic 60 machining speeds and feeds tables

Nitronic 60 speeds and feeds are conservative compared to free-machining steel due to the 35 percent relative machinability rating. Positive-rake carbide tooling is preferred; cobalt-HSS acceptable for prototype work. Coolant flood is essential. Rigid setup matters; vibration accelerates tool wear and produces poor surface finish.

TorqBolt stocks Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) at our Mumbai head office and Rajkot production plant. Each consignment ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certification by default and 3.2 dual-witnessed inspection (Lloyds, TUV, DNV, BV) on request. Contact info@torqbolt.com or +91-22-66157017 for sized stock and lead time.

Operation-Specific Parameters

Turning carbide: surface speed 30 to 60 m/min, depth of cut 1.0 to 2.5 mm, feed 0.10 to 0.30 mm/rev. Use coolant flood.

Turning HSS: surface speed 8 to 15 m/min, depth of cut 0.5 to 1.5 mm, feed 0.05 to 0.15 mm/rev.

Drilling cobalt-HSS: surface speed 12 to 20 m/min, feed 0.08 to 0.20 mm/rev. Peck-drill on holes deeper than 3 diameters.

Drilling carbide: surface speed 25 to 40 m/min, feed 0.10 to 0.25 mm/rev.

Threading: peripheral speed 15 to 25 m/min, depth-per-pass 0.05 to 0.10 mm for carbide thread mill.

See machinability page for tool selection guidance and chip-evacuation strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nitronic 60 speeds and feeds?

See the values in the table above. The speeds and feeds of Nitronic 60 is one of the property metrics that distinguishes it from 304 / 316L.

Why does Nitronic 60 speeds and feeds matter?

For design engineering decisions, speeds and feeds directly affects component sizing, service envelope, and material substitution choices.

How is speeds and feeds verified?

Standard test methods per ASTM. Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) reports the measured value for the heat lot.

What is the temperature dependence?

Nitronic 60 retains useful properties from -196 C cryogenic to ~815 C upper service temperature. Above 540 C check sigma-phase precipitation envelope.
